ActionAid was established in 1972 as a secular and non-political, UK based development agency. It works with poor and marginalised people in the developing world, helping them to achieve lasting improvements in the quality of their lives and attempts to reach them regardless of religion, race or political persuasion.
ActionAid International is a new organisation combining affiliates and associates governed by an overarching International Board of Trustees and supported by an International Secretariat based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Our governance is inspired by the commitment to form an organization governed and managed with the vision and leadership of the people from its northern and southern members and by the recognition that in our fight against poverty we can have greater impact when we are able to act together in coalition and partnership with others on a local, national and global level. ActionAid International works with poor and excluded people in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean who are denied their rights to live in dignity.
ActionAid started working in Vietnam since 1989 in response to the Hunger Eradication and Poverty Reduction Campaign initiated by the Government of Vietnam. ActionAid Vietnam (AAV)’s programs aim at eradicating poverty of poor women, men, boys and girls by ensuring their rights and entitlements to a life of dignity, equity and justice. Over the last eighteen years, AAV’s work has gone through various changes informed by its engagement with the community at all levels. The scope of work has also grown substantially in content, coverage, complexity and commitment over this period. The working approach has changed from its direct management of day to day operation to partnership mode with either local government organizations or local NGOs to design, implement and fund anti-poverty programmes in remote and poorest areas of Vietnam.
Similarly, it adopted right-based approach since 2001 with the aim to engage multiple stakeholders such as the government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community based organizations as well as the right-holders and individuals towards bringing positive changes in the lives of the poor and excluded people.
In the current strategy, ActionAid International Vietnam (AAV) focuses its work on mobilising and empowering poor and excluded people so they can claim their rights and entitlements, as well as on enhancing their capability and collective voice to influence and shape policies, while holding government policy makers and other development actors accountable for decisions and programmes that affect the lives of people.
